Car camping is already a relatively environmentally friendly way to have a holiday – it doesn’t involve international travel and, once you have your equipment, there is very little that is additionally needed, thereby minimising your ongoing consumption. However, there are still some things to look out for in order to ensure that you are car camping in an environmentally friendly way.

Pick up your rubbish and dispose of it properly

Rule number one of car camping is to make sure you leave your camping spot as you found it. That includes clearing up any rubbish and properly disposing of it (many campsites have facilities to dispose of your rubbish, but if not you can always take it home or look for a local disposal area). Consider bringing several rubbish bags so that you can separate your rubbish, recycling, and food waste.

Don’t go far

You don’t have to travel far when car camping for it to feel like a holiday. Not only is car camping a great chance to become more acquainted with your local area, but reducing your travel distance will also save on petrol, decreasing your carbon emissions and also having the added bonus of saving you some money!

Don’t over-pack

Because the CampBoxx takes up less space than most regular camping equipment, it might be tempting to pack extra things that you don’t really need simply because you have the space. But if your car is heavier, it actually burns more fuel, which can add up over the course of many camping trips. Try to pack as light as possible – that way, you’ll also have the added benefit of having a more organised space when camping!

Water

Be minimal in your water use – try to be conservative with water when washing up dishes and for any other uses. Instead of buying plastic bottles of water, consider filling up reusable bottles for your trip.

Reusable and biodegradable are best

It can be tempting when camping to fall prey to the ease of single use products. However, these can take a serious toll on the environment. Whilst it can be tempting to avoid doing the washing up by bringing plastic cutlery and paper plates, it’s much more environmentally friendly to bring reusable tableware. It’s also a good idea to remember to bring reusable water bottles for drinking water.  If you don’t have shower facilities and want to partake in the infamous ‘baby wipe shower’, consider using biodegradable wipes. A solar-heated shower bag is also a great alternative. Biodegradable rubbish bags are also a great way to cut down on your long-term impact on the planet.

Solar power as much as possible

As we’ve already mentioned, solar-heated showers are a great option – but don’t stop there! Take advantage of nature’s battery and get some solar-powered phone chargers, flashlights, and just about anything else you need to stay powered during your trip!
